PLAYING BLINDS AND ANTES

Inexperienced or novice players often make the mistake of misunderstanding precisely how to play blinds and antes. Here in this discussion, I am focusing on your own blinds as opposed to play against other players’ blinds. The aspects of stealing opponents’ blinds and antes have already been discussed, and I again touch on those subjects later in this book as they become applicable. Players make errors in playing their blinds because they take their experiences in ring games and apply them to tournament play. Whenever you’re playing in a ring game, you can always reach into your pocket, wallet, or purse, and put more money on the table when needed. Not so in poker tournaments, with the exception of rebuy tournaments, but even in those the playing of your blinds is likely to require that you will be spending more to remain in this tournament by having to rebuy than you should have in the first place. If you want to refresh your memory about some of the reasons that rebuy tournaments can become costly, I refer you again to earlier chapters in this book. The error that is made here—and sometimes this can even be made by more experienced players—is basically twofold:

• The ring game mind-set

• The cheap blinds defense
